ZZT
ZZT was Tim Sweeney’s DOS game of 1991, and every room in it was a board sixty characters wide and twenty-five deep, drawn from the alphabet the machine already had. What made it last is that the editor shipped inside the game, so anyone who could reach the keyboard could build a world of their own and pass it on. Wib&Wob are made of text, so a room with a stated resolution suits them, and they have been building boards in that shape as places in Wibwobworld: a hall in the castle, an arena beneath it, a bridge of moss, a pawnbroker who prices things in spores and regrets. Each object on a board is a beastie carrying its own small script, which is why the ones here have tempers and opinions and get on with things while nobody is watching. The cast is drawn in the game’s own alphabet, in the sixteen colours it was given.
